What is a compound microscope? The term itself tends to mean a biological type of microscopy equipment, capable of high power magnification with objectives that are selectable. The word “compound” originally came from the fact that this type of microscope uses multiple lens in conjunction with each other, hence giving a “compounding” magnification. Each lens has a particular power of magnification, with the resultant combined magnification being the multiplication of each constituent lens. For example, a student microscope, used to look at dried blood on a prepared microscope slide, may use a 40x power objective. The eyepiece may be 10x or could as well be 16x. The resultant combined magnification of the microscopy system is the 40x times the 10x eyepiece, equal to 400x total power magnifying view to the student.
While a stereo microscope also technically has multiple lenses with a compounding effect, they are not termed “compound”. Generally, the compound microscopes are used for looking at prepared slides under high power. Objectives commonly used are 4x, 20x, 40x, and 100x. The 100x is usually an oil immersion type to improve viewing resolution. High school and university level biology labs, clinical and medical offices, and research facilities often use compound microscopes for imaging of specimens.
A compound microscope can be a monocular (single eyetube), binocular (two eyetubes with two eyepieces), or a trinocular with a third port for photography or video camera equipment. A unit can be as simple as a toy with very basic lens, a medium student grade unit for school, or a high quality research laboratory microscope capable of high quality imaging at high magnification. A higher grade unit may be a full digital compound microscope with capability to directly connect via USB cable to the USB port on a computer. This allows live video imaging of the microscopic image as well as digital image capture with the still camera.
